History

Perry Lewis, who migrated from New York, homesteaded with a timber claim on land that was later platted to become the Village of Meadow Grove. In 1886, the Village of Meadow Grove was created when Mr. Lewis “gave away lots to get a new town started, for those that would build and start businesses. There were eight blocks in the original site and two additions have been added since.” ( from Do You Remember… written by local author Lenora Kuchar).  The first business was a grist mill located on Buffalo Creek, and then a grocery store, post office and hardware store were built.  Eventually, the Village would have banks, a hotel, drug store, implement dealer, grain elevators and lumber yards, a blacksmith, photographer, cafes, schools and churches.
